The burning oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons that are obtained by diluting a high viscosity residue with a distillate of the first distillation, such as kerosene or diesel, which is used for the stationary combustion in the production of steam for industrial use, supply of large diesel engines or in generation of electricity.

The burning oil quality is regulated at national level by the DPCM on 8 March 2002, classified according to viscosity and sulfur content.
